CybraryN

We have started using CybraryN computer reservation software to facilitate the use of our internet and word processing computers. Our computers are open to anyone holding a GMILCS library card. You will need to bring your library card with you since the system uses your barcode number to log you on.

Our stand-up internet terminals can be used for two 15 minute sessions per day; the sitdown computers can be used for two 90 minute sessions and the word-processors can be used for two 120 minute sessions. Any two consecutive computer sessions require a 15 minute break between them in order to provide access to patrons who may be waiting.

WolframAlpha

If you haven't already visited wolframalpha.com, I highly recommend that you give it a try. WolframAlpha is a computational database -- I think that is what I would call it -- that allows you to quickly associate random bits of data, or access concise summaries of information. Want to know what the moon phase was on the day you were born? Type in your date of birth and it will tell you. Want to know the mass of Jupiter? It can tell you that and much more.

While not a search engine, you can interact with it the same way up to a point. You may need to rethink your search strategies a bit if you are used to using Google for most of your information retrieval. The nice thing about this new tool is that rather than provide you with a link to a web page, as Google does, WolframAlpha gives you the information you are looking for right on its search page.

Welcome

The Reference Department at the Kelley Library will be using this forum to let you about new services and resources. We hope you check in often and let us know what you think.
